History:

Ian was born in Oxford England where his father was serving as a lecturer at the University of Oxford. After his father was awarded a permanent professorship at the University the Roberts family made Oxford their home.

Ian was identified early on in his childhood as having a genius level IQ and was enrolled in a number of gifted and advanced programs while he was young. Because Ian was younger than most of the other students in the classes that he took he was picked on frequently and never felt included in any group. It was at this stage of his life that he was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.

Ian graduated high school with honors at the age of 15 and began taking classes at the University of Oxford where he felt he wasn’t getting a proper education. His fear wasn’t the quality of the material but the fact that everything seemed to be too easy for him, as if he was getting an unfair advantage because of his father’s status at the university which had increased immensely due to a number of papers and research in Astrophysics.

Ian continued taking classes but was overheard a discussion with some classmates regarding star fleet and some of the opportunities that they would have to pursue science further than what Earth could afford. Without his father knowing, Ian applied to Starfleet academy and against his father’s wishes, attended the academy.

Ian graduated near the top of his class behind a couple vulcan cadets which was to be expected from the science division and was posted as an astrometrics officer on board the USS Endevour. He excelled at his position not only because of his knowledge in the field but also because of the solitude he found in the astometrics lab. There was only one other officer that worked on there and they worked opposite shifts. Ian could focus on his work and couldn’t be happier.

Starfleet took a chance on Ian by making him the Astrophysics team lead aboard Starbase 31. His files did include his social anxiety disorder and they wanted to see how well he would interact with people like him. Initially, Ian despised the position having to attend meetings, manage others but eventually he was able to adapt and enjoyed the position. His research primarily based around the formation of class 14 nebulas. Starfleet became rather interested in his work as he was able to propose a way to navigate through these nebulas without the loss of subsystems by reconfiguring a ship’s deflector array to produce intermittent and precise magneoton bursts which would deflect certain charged particles away from the ship in a manner that a small percentage of the particles found near the ship would remain and could be countered through normal means.

With this research in hand Starfleet saw fit to promote Ian Roberts and place him on board a vessel where he could endeavor to further enhance Starship protocols on board ships and enhance their abilities in the field.
